All Roads Lead to the Beach for the Happy Nantucket Traveler
Located just 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast, the island of Nantucket offers a very laid back atmosphere for those interested in
cobblestone streets, outstanding New England cuisine and an interesting array of antique, craft and specialty stores. Not into shopping? How about wetting a line in the surf for a chance at bragging rights after landing one of the elusive, hard-hitting Striped Bass or Bluefish.
Okay, craft shops and fishing not in your plans. How about just kicking back and enjoying a relaxing day at the beaches? Walk along the shoreline in the soft sand and catch the setting sun's rays.
While visiting this quiet little island a must see are the lighthouses, especially Great Point lighthouse where you will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to navigate the soft sandy road for a distance of about seven miles. Before attempting the drive be sure that you really know how to drive in very soft sand because even with a 4-wheel drive jeep you can still get stuck and pay a hefty tow charge to be rescued. The lighthouse stands at the northern tip of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge where birds, harbor seals and ocassionally grey seals are found resting, undisturbed by human crowds.
